Concept
Breakaway is an annual conference for several hundred middle and high school students with a different theme and topic for discussion each year. This year’s theme is “Superheroes Can’t Save You”. That was the entirety of the brief I had when I took this project. I knew they would need t-shirts, brochures, and a logo, so I set about building a brand.

Inspiration
I’m a huge nerd (and proud of it), so superheroes are right in line with my aesthetic, and I was excited to get to work on this one. I knew I wanted something that was bold and dynamic to emphasize the superhero style. The more I brainstormed and worked on concepts, the more I gravitated to a comic book style – bold colors, heavy lines, and action / motion throughout. I went through several iterations before settling on a hand drawn “Incredibles-esque” look with a superhero silhouette in motion that goes past its bounding box. From there, I built a comic book panel background with action lines, and I added a halftone pattern to further emphasize the comic book feel.
